Foundation History
Colonial St. Augustine Foundationwas incorporated in 2002 to continue a decades-old program to preserve and restore appropriate parts of the colonial city.
That program, known locally as "The Restoration," began in 1935 upon the recommendation of a national committee of citizens, public officials, and scholars. From 1959 to 1997, the State of Florida administered the Restoration program. During that time, under the auspices of the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, it restored and reconstructed over forty colonial-era buildings. The Board focused its effort on the northern section of the colonial presidio of St. Augustine, adjacent to the Castillo de San Marcos.

In 1997, the State of Florida abandoned that program and leased its remaining properties to the City of St. Augustine, saddling the small municipality and its 12,000 residents with responsibility for preserving a heritage program of national importance.
Colonial St. Augustine Foundationwas formed to mobilize the support of private citizensto assist the City in a task that deserves statewide and national assistance.
